Elections and Boundaries Commission comments on situation

A picture may tell a thousand words, but Severo Guerrero’s picture is telling thousands by our word count. Guerrero was photographed long after the close of office hours in the Elections and Boundaries Office. So far Marilee Squires has been suspended by the Elections and Boundaries C.E.O., Josephine Tamai. Squires had admitted being at fault, but was the voter’s list tainted? News Five spoke via phone to the Chairman of the Elections and Boundaries Commission, which has been apprised of the situation by the C.E.O.

Jose Sanchez

“There was a U.D.P. city councilor who is running for election was found in the office there over the weekend and he couldn’t have gotten in there without assistance from someone from election and boundaries. What becomes of that particular employee and what becomes of that person’s candidacy?”

Alberto August, Chairman, Elections and Boundaries Commission

Alberto August

“Well like I continue to mention to you all, in this country, there are two electoral management bodies—there is the elections and boundaries commissions and then there is the elections and boundaries department. The commission sets the constitutional policies for the conduct of elections and the registration of voters. The department is the one that does the operation aspect of elections and boundaries. In other words, the Chief Elections Officer is responsible for the staffing and the day to day operation of the thirteen registration offices around this country. The commission comes in to play because then the registering officers have access to the voter’s list and the voter’s list is a matter that the election and boundaries commission takes seriously. So any kind of irregularity or perception of irregularity with regards to the official voter’s list, then the elections and boundaries commission views it as a serious, serious matter. Now for matters of tampering; when that information came to our attention, the information as passed on the Chief Elections Officer and she was instructed to conduct the relevant investigation immediately and to advise the commission of her findings. So in terms of that matter, it is simply a matter for the Chief Elections Officer to handle.”

Jose Sanchez

“So there would be some reprimand for that particular employee that let this man into the office?”

Alberto August

“Well at the commission level, we don’t get involved at that state; that is entirely up to the Chief Elections Officer. Then on the basis of her report, we at the commission level, we are going to evaluate the entire situation.”

Jose Sanchez

“Can anyone with access to the computer change, delete or alter information for people on the list?”

Alberto August

“We have received a preliminary report on the investigation from the Chief Elections Officer and based on what she’s telling us, although a person might sit behind a computer at any office countrywide, changes can only be made at the central office in Belize City. But beside the point, the perception of an outsider sitting behind a computer in an election and boundaries office does not look well. So we are just awaiting now the outcome of the investigation and the type of action that will be taken in regards to this matter.”

Jose Sanchez

“Let me ask you—this may not come under your portfolio, but when it comes to that particular candidate, who then can decide whether or not this candidate should just be disqualified or barred from continuing being that he was caught in a compromising position?”

Alberto August

“Well that is a political matter. That will be determined I suspect by the political party that he is representing.”

The Corruption Officers from around the country of Belize are working overtime to make sure the election runs smooth with no surprises. Stealing elections is hard work involving long hours. Soon after they win they will need more power and money for this extra hard work they are doing to the country now. New laws are needed for those caught and must get off. Promotions ard awards for the best corruption officers who steal the most and not get caught; their avarice is inspirational for aspiring street gangs who need to expand their grip on Belizean Society.
