Bus driver charged for death of 2 year old

Fidel Lanza

A horrific accident occurred in Double Head Cabbage on December ninth; two young siblings were hit and one died shortly after at the KHMH.  Two-year-old Rushina McFadzean and her five year old brother, TeJohn McFadzean were both knocked down as they were heading to a baby sister.  The tragic accident occurred in the vicinity of Belize Rural Primary School and around many students of Rancho Dolores, Bermudian Landing and Flowers Bank who were left traumatized. Forty-seven year old Fidel Lanza of Isabella Bank was the driver of the bus. Today in court, he was charged with Manslaughter by Negligence, Negligent Grievous Harm, Causing Death by Careless Conduct and Driving without Due Care and Attention. He was granted bail of seven thousand, five hundred dollars, but Chief Magistrate, Ann Marie Smith ordered him to surrender all travel documents and to report to the Ladyville Police Station every Monday. He met the court’s conditions and is to reappear in court on January eighteenth.

The Ministry of Education and Youth said today that to ensure the safety of the children, school wardens are posted at each of the three campuses comprising the Belize Rural Primary School as well as on the buses that daily transport the children.  The Ministry says it will review the report on the incident and current practices to reduce the likelihood of such incidents.

what is there to laugh about-even if it was the mom’s fault-doesnt he still feel bad? another ignorant bus driver who cant drive, cant park on highways and act like they own the road.

and what charges will be brought against the Mother of the child. It is very unfortunate that this guy has the face the stiffest penalties of the law for an accident that was waiting to happen.

parents nowadays dont monitor their small kids and expect the older ones to it. from all accounts it was an unfortunate accident, and according to one of the teachers in the bus the kids were walking in the “bus zone” carelessly. Its sad a child had to die, but accidents happen and parents need to learn to be “parents” too

Hmmm, from the looks of this picture it appears Mr.Lanza just won the lotto or mega bingo. What is there to smile about in the death of a child & to see that he’s walking out of a court room where a judge slap him with some serious charges, he’s smiling like a kid on Christmas day.

cg cut your crap! Have you ever done things while growing up that your parents told you never to do? I thaught so!

In any case it is never good to drive the way they drive in Belize and this is the real problem. This is a rural area and children should be able to be much more free.

If the buss driver had taken due care and paid attention that child would be alive today even if his mother was no where to be seen!

This was an unfortunate accident, and it’s so sad that it had to take a life of an innocient child to bring awareness to the Belizean government on how much safety they lack when transporting children to and from school on a school bus! I know the two younger children were not on the bus but as much as the bus driver may have negilected being more attentive to his surroundings, the childrens mother is at fault as well. I personally am a mother as well and i think that there are many parents now of day that seem to forget that they are parents. From the start it was wrong for a 5yr old to be taking his 2yr old sister to the babysitter. They could have both died or not even that they could have been kidnapped. Really people this mother needs to be punished for her negligence as well not only the driver! If u have kids it not ur kids responsiblity to look after there younger brothers or sisters unless they are over the age of 15 and then just maybe u can consider them to be somewhat a help to u!! It’s sad but this is not just happening in Belize it happends every where! I know right now there are no words that can express how this mothers feels. I’m sure even though we are all critizing her, she is probably having a hard time living daily because it’s an accident that could have been avoided had she walked the kids herself instead of a her 5yrd old!!! my prayers go out to both families that or child and the bus Driver!!!

@marie and deede, how stupid can you two be this picture could have been taken a long time ago and posted on this site, it does not mean that this man is happy, have any one of you ever been involved in an accident of this magnitude? i think not when mishap like this happen it takes an emotoinal and psychological toll on the person behind the wheel. it is profound effect you have todeal with for ever, so dont just blurt out that he is happy because of this picture, this man will be suffering as much as the folks who lost a child. think before you comment.

I don’t believe the bus driver is at fault here. Where are the school gaurds that are suppose to be there to monotor and direct these children, They should be there at ALL TIMES! when children are arriving and leaving these premises.Where the parent of these children, you don’t allow children that young to be alone.Wise up Belize if this continues a lot of innocent drivers will be in jail, charge for things to are not their fault and out of their control.

  9. Robert2 says:

@cayobway: So true, whether responsible or not , nobody would be smiling at this time. let us pray “Thy kingdom come….”
