Kim Barrow’s Christmas Concert for Kids

It was an early Christmas for well deserved children from numerous children’s homes across the country. The second annual Spirit of Christmas Concert took place on Saturday morning at the Bliss. Over two hundred attended and left with gifts courtesy of the Special Envoy for Women and Children. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports.

The spirit of Christmas filled the Bliss Center on Saturday morning as children who won’t be spending the holidays with their families were given a special treat. They were the guests of honor at a special Christmas concert organized by Special Envoy for Women and Children, Kim Simplis Barrow.
Kendra Griffith, Program Coordinator, Special Envoy for Women and Children

“What we just had was the second annual Spirit of Christmas concert. It’s a special concert that is put on by Mrs. Kim Simpliss Barrow and it is specifically for children who are living in child care institutions. These children they have to be away from their family and friends and so she decided to have the concert just as a way of imbuing them with the spirit of Christmas so they feel a little bit of the festivities and get to feel special.”

According to the Program Coordinator, Kendra Griffith, they reached out to children’s homes across the country to spread the joy of the season far and wide.

“We had invited eight children’s homes—some of them could not make it for various reasons and Mrs. Barrow is also a global ambassador for Special Olympics and so we usually invite the Stella Maris School. Unfortunately Stella Maris had the Special Olympics today and the majority of the students could not make it. But we had Hosanna House that is on the Hummingbird Highway, Esperanza Boys Home, the Hattieville Girls Home, Kings Children’s Home, Liberty Children’s Home, the Dorothy Menzies Children’s Home, we invited Marla’s House of Hope and we also invited some children who are suffering from cancer and are also cancer survivors, we invited St. Luke’s Choir because we utilize their services a lot for our ceremonies and we wanted to give something back to them. And then we also invited our partners and supporters so that they can also bring their kids to enjoy it.”

And it was a fun filled event for everyone in the audience, from the younger kids to teenagers and in the end, no one left the Bliss empty handed because Santa Claus was in the house.

“We transport all the children from the various children’s homes across Belize to the Bliss Center in Belize City and we just put on like a variety show type concert for them. As you see we had performances from Supa G, Melonie Gillett, Denise Castillo, Sean Soldano. We had Ozzy the Clown, we have Dora and Diego. And because the age ranges vary we have to cater to all of them so that is why there’s this variety. We had the Ballet Art School, so you know it’s just a fun time for them.”

“We also give gifts to the homes because these homes are usually experiencing some kind of financial need and strife and so we ask them what is an item that they could use at the homes and then we try and procure it for them. And then we give gifts to the managers as well because it’s a really stressful job running a childcare institution and so in appreciation for all their hard work, we give gifts to the managers so that they can soldier on for the following year. And this year we had gifts for all the children who attended the concert and so it was a really fun time and a really great event for them.”

The surprise of the morning was an appearance by Simpliss Barrow, who was not expected to make it due to her health condition.

Kendra Griffith

“That was a surprise that we had for the kids and you know she wants all the events and activities that she has in the pipeline to go on regardless of her illness. And so she made a special effort to come out today and to be here for it because it’s also a great event for her and she has a young daughter and she also enjoys it so it was really great to see her at the concert.”

The following day, on Sunday, Simplis Barrow left the country, accompanied by Prime Minister Dean Barrow, and returned to Miami where she will undergo another round of chemotherapy for stage three breast cancer. The PM is scheduled to return to the country on December ninth.  In the interim, Minister of Education and Youth, Patrick Faber, will be acting Prime Minister since DPM Gaspar Vega is also out of the country, attending the Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa.
