P.U.P. City Council slate revealed

On the other side of the political fence, the People’s United Party has now installed Freetown Area Representative Francis Fonseca as its new leader. This Saturday, the party is going into high gear with a convention to elect its official slate of councilor candidates for the 2012 Municipal Elections.  Led by former director of the National Drug Abuse Control Council Karen Bodden, the unendorsed P.U.P. Eleven promises to deliver what it believes the incumbent U.D.P. City Council has failed to achieve during its consecutive terms in office.  It’s a manifesto promise that is all too familiar but they intend to improve the overall quality of life for residents of the Old Capital.  While it may not be the final selection to contest the seats at City Hall, Bodden says her roster of political hopefuls, including onetime independent politician Erwin X, is a diverse collection of talents that will bring about necessary changes for the affairs of the city to be managed effectively.

Karen Bodden

“On my slate we have all the constituencies represented to begin with which is good in terms of the representation of the people.  We also have people from all walks of life so we have for example DJ Tambran, [who’s] well known.  We have a journalist, Alberto Vellos, like yourself.  We have educators like Mr. Lacey.  We have businessmen like the people standing behind me where you have Erwin, an entrepreneur.  You also have Gilroy Usher Jr., another businessman.  You have Bobby Cadle or he likes to say Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadle Jr., another businessman.  We also have Mr. Edward Young who again brings that business background to the slate and I think in terms of looking at all that we also have Mr. Babani who is very young, very young but at the same time a very astute businessman.  So [with] all these people they bring skills that definitely we need in terms of looking at a well-rounded slate.”

“Why would the average voter go with this People’s United Party ticket as opposed to any other ticket primarily the U.D.P. in this instance?”

Karen Bodden

“Very simple, we are sick and tired of being sick and tired and that comes from my drug education background.  Whenever you are working with people who have been exposed to a derogatory lifestyle they reach a point where they are just fed up.  You are sick and tired of being sick and tired and you look around and you ask yourself then what can I do and the alternative is clear because we have given this U.D.P. City Council two terms to get it right.  They didn’t get it right the first term and they certainly didn’t get it right the next term.”

Gilroy Usher Jr.

“In terms of some of the fundamental changes that you propose to bring to the city council, what can the public expect if you are to be elected a councilor?”

Gilroy Usher Jr.

“I think one of the things that people could expect is one: to have a candidate that will try to bring about a change that will accomplish a state of the art city in Belize.  I think that we have a city that is defunct.  There is no sort of investment.  There is no entrepreneurial hope.  There is no, the parks are in disarray.  There is no, the streets are in the worst condition we have ever seen and I have seen other cities, like if you’ve been to the States or if you’ve been to Chetumal whereby you see cities that people can be proud of.  That is what I want for Belize City.  That is what I want to bring.  I want to help participate in the structuring of a state of the art city.”

“I’m involved because I want to see change, positively, meaningful and effective change.”

Isani Cayetano

“Do you think that a vote for you is going to accomplish this during a term in office?”

Erwin X

“Yes sir.  A vote for me will definitely be a plus because this is what we need and not only me but also the members of my team and the strong members that our people could look at to say we need to get these people involved.”

The municipal convention will be held at St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday afternoon from one to four o’clock.
