Marcelino Miranda, Press Officer, Mexican Embassy

“The government of México has just implemented a new registration system for Mexicans abroad. This is a system that has been established for Mexicans all over the world and in the case of Mexicans living in Belize, they are going to benefit because they will be able to register in the system and the government of Mexico is going to provide information about Belize and also they will be able to provide protection and consular assistance in case of emergency and in case of a natural disaster. So the intention of this system is to keep contact with Mexicans all over the world and especially, in this case, here in Belize, in order to amplify and also to enlarge the protection net for Mexicans in Belize.”

“And can they become a part of this program?”

Marcelino Miranda

“It’s very easy; for those Mexicans who are interested, they can access the webpage. They can also come to the Mexican Embassy. We can provide them with information in order to register and they just go on the internet, they introduce their names, the contact number and an email and that’s it. It’s free of cost and the advantage of having an email is that they can receive on their email useful information and in case of emergency or in case of a natural disaster they can receive bulletins and information about the emergency.”

“Is there anything in place to verify the identity of these people? I mean anyone can just sign in on this site?”

Marcelino Miranda

“When Mexicans register, they have to introduce an official Mexican ID; that is a passport or sometimes that can be resident cards that the Mexican consulates provide. But yeah, there is a verification of the nationality of the Mexicans.”

Miranda notes that any information provided at the website,, will be confidential and protected by Mexican Federal Law.
