PM says resignation of B.T.B.’s Seleni Matus is unfortunate

Seleni Matus

Seleni Matus resigned as Director of Tourism with immediate effect on September twenty-third. An attempt at resignation was called off previously, but there was growing tension between Matus and the Board of Directors of the B.T.B.  Matus later stated that her leadership was being subverted by an intrusive board as well as a Tourism Ministry that is intent on political maneuvering. The B.T.B. would only say that they accepted her resignation, but it is reported that there was huge sums of money spent without the board’s authorization. Well, to make the point that no one is indispensible, Prime Minister Dean Barrow told News Five today that a new director is being sought and that the strategic plan drafted and implemented under the guidance of Matus will proceed accordingly.  He further noted that political interference by the Board of Directors in the day to day affairs of B.T.B. is rather difficult considering its composition of representatives from various tourism agencies.

Dean Barrow

“Ms. Matus has resigned.  [It’s] unfortunate but I don’t expect that that will in any way interfere with the implementation of the plan that had already been agreed by the directors of the Belize Tourism Board with respect to carrying the industry forward.”

Dean Barrow

“She made a comment or an inference in an interview post her resignation regarding the political influence of the board of directors of B.T.B.  Can you speak to us on that?”

Dean Barrow

“I don’t know what she was talking about and I’m not going to get into any back and forth with Ms. Matus or anybody else.  I supported Ms. Matus while she was there.  The B.T.B., as far as I know, is comprised, that is the Board of Directors, is comprised of a number of individuals perhaps the majority of whom are appointed by their respective organizations, the Belize Hotel Association, the BTIA.  So I don’t know how there can be any question of partisan politics in terms of the affairs of the B.T.B. and I would leave it at that.”

Matus has since been replaced by Javier Paredez, Director of Revenue Collections at B.T.B., on an interim basis.

There is no more tourism in Belize. The tourists are gone. Hotels are empty. Everyone is broke. Just shut the BTB down and save Belize a bunch of money.

JoBro you are right, I use to go to Belize because my da lived there. I won’t go there now; too much crime and police corruption. I’m afraid of getting robbed and my dad and friends were in seperate home invasions there this year. Also a friend a murder.
