CYDP, Restore Belize and some youths play football at camp

The CYDP in partnership with Restore Belize and Community Rehabilitation Department closed off their annual Summer Camp at the Yabra Green Football Field this afternoon. Over the past three weeks, at risk youths in the under seventeen and under fifteen categories were engaged in sports and life skills training. Director of CYDP, Edward Broaster says a new element was introduced this year.

Edward Broaster, Director, CYDP

“We’ve held these summer camps every year since 2008 but this year we’ve added a component through the stewardship of Restore Belize where we do life skills sessions in the morning for the young persons in the areas of  conflict resolution and anger management and practical ways in which they can address anger issues and so forth.”

“At the time of the start of the life skills training up to when it was completed were you able to see maybe a difference in these young people especially in the way they articulate themselves, in the way they thing and so forth?”

Shanikka Arnold, Facilitator

“There was definitely a great difference in the way they came in versus the way they left. You could see that there was an obvious growth that occurred during the time. They came in quiet, shy, with a little understanding of what were their real purpose here but left knowing that they don’t have to get into this loud boisterous argument, that there are ways to resolve their conflicts that area lot easier. There are ways to control their anger and at the end of the day I believe that for many of them their self esteem went from none existent to where it needs to be.”

“How many young people were the target for this year’s summer camp?”

Edward Broaster

“We have over two hundred and fifty young people that we have had for the summer camp and right now these two teams ‘Survivor’ and ‘Yabra’ are vying for the title for the football competition.  We had basketball running for two weeks, football for three weeks and then we had our annual adventure camp at Cockscomb Basin.”

At the end of the final football match the youth were awarded first second and third place trophies, medals, certificates and cash prizes.
