S.S.B. declines multimillion dollar loan to Mena Group

In June of this year the Investment Committee of the Social Security Board approved a fourteen point nine million dollar loan request by Nature Fresh Belize Limited. Nature Fresh is a company owned by the Mena Group which also owned Fresh catch, a tilapia farm that was taken over by its creditors last year. The fourteen million dollar loan request was steered though the Social Security by Senator Godwin Hulse, as consultant to the Mena Group. Cabinet didn’t support the loan but said that the S.S.B. was independent to act. Reports are that the loan request has now been rejected by the S.S.B. because of the public outcry to invest the people’s money in a private business. The loan was to be used to restart tilapia farming operations in La Democracia. We contacted Joe Mena, of the Mena Group, who said he would get back to us on the matter.

  1. Ricky Malthus says:

Well Joe, you can still save your Nature Fresh project if the mealy mouth Goodwin Hulse woul know where to secure financing. SSB should have been the last place to look to finance your project since you should how mercurial politics and government. But not to worry, there is a loan for you if only Hulse will look in right place. Just remember, the old ways of doing business in Belize are over, and true competition is on the door steps. no more Crony Capitalism. But get Goodwin to look since he has earned and received his consultant fee.
