Healthy Living gets an eye check

Many people take for granted that because they have twenty-twenty vision, they have nothing to worry about. But the fact is that proper and timely eye care is a necessity to everyone; whether you have perfect eyesight or you use glasses. This week Healthy Living looks at how to protect your eyes and for those already experiencing vision loss; how to prevent further damage.

Marleni Cuellar, Reporting
There are many different causes for vision loss; some are due to uncontrollable circumstances and a few are within our power of control. Having good eye care is extremely important. Rita Witzil has worked with the BCVI for the past six years, she shares with us some advice on taking care of your eyes

Rita Witzil, Optamologist, BCVI

Rita Witzil

“People sometimes tend to believe that if they have vision and they don’t have any trouble seeing from distance or close but we do not know how our eyes, the health of our eyes and that is very important. It’s just like the way we eat, we control our diets what we are eating sometimes then it’s the same way we have to take care of our eyes too and that includes doing a regular eyes exam.”

An eye exam doesn’t require much time or money if done at the BCVI eye clinic but it is an important investment to make for the maintenance of your vision.

Rita Witzil

“If they notice any discharge on their eyes, if they have pain, or watery eyes. Itching eyes, they need to come as soon as possible to have an eye exam so we can see the problem they are having and if we can- if they can be treated on time rather than wait for long and it will be more- it will cause more problem and farther damage to the eye.”

Even if you already have prescribed glasses; a yearly eye exam is still very important.

Rita Witzil

“If a person doesn’t wear his or her glasses appropriately as it is suppose to be;03.38 if they tend to take a long period of time wearing the same glasses it might affect them and make the vision worse than to help them.”

Some of the other regular habits we have that may affect our eyes include spending too much time in front of the computer.

Rita Witzil

“Working with computers especially those that don’t have any protective screen for the eyes.01.44 in the longer road we know that people tend to have headaches, pain in the eyes, they itchy or burning eyes, red eyes and this is mostly when they work for a long period of time on the computers02.03 so it makes the eyes weaker.  My advice for them is to do a regular eyes exam at least once a year. Just in case they need any reading glasses to work in front of the computer or just to use as a protective to protect their eyes from the computer.”

Even contact wearers have some bad habits that can cause further damage to the eye.

Rita Witzil

“Those that wear contact lens we advice that when they go to sleep that to please take off their contacts.  If you sleep with your contacts on that might be cause for an infection. It causes an infection to the cornea which is the transparent layer that we have on your eyes and it helps to protect us from infection cause if it gets and infection the infection can cause vision loss if not treated on time.”

While, the general recommendation is that every person should get a yearly eye exam; Rita underscores that patients with glaucoma, or a family history of glaucoma and persons with diabetes must ensure that a regular eye exam is a part of their routine.
