What is the role of the Bar Association regarding the 9th?

Jacqueline Marshalleck

So what is the role of the Bar Association in the ninth amendment? The Bar has been kept busy in court with a number of cases with the government and consideration is now being given to proceed to the court on the latest proposal to change the constitution.

Jacqueline Marshalleck, President, Belize Bar Association

“I think we will have to continue to be advocates, I think we will admittedly have to give consideration as to whether or not we will have to challenge this bill in the event that government decides that it doesn’t want to pull it back. But ultimately what we would want to see is if you want to treat with the nationalizations and acquisitions and you want to ensure majority interest is vested in the government, go ahead. But the provisions that stop Belizean people from having the audits and checks done in the court to see whether or not the content of the legislation passed by the National Assembly in relation to constitutional amendments; we don’t want you to take away our right to have the court make that check. You make good law; you go ahead and make good laws. As long as you make good laws that are in accordance with our constitution, there’s not going to be a problem. The problems come when the laws are not.”

I agree with Mark Pech. Johnny needs to make his leadership skills come into play. It is time that he puts his party’s machinery into gears. I sense there is a general feeling that the people are waiting for this type of leadership. Barrow is not powerful at this point in time. His 25-6 majority in the House just makes him powerful, a king, a demi-god in the House of Representative and this reality gives him the privilege to abuse his power to be a despot Prime Minister. But the real power lies in the people of Belize; Barrow does not have the people now. It is only the power of the people that can override the POWER that Barrow thinks he has. Now, is the time to stop Barrow from clothing himself with the constitution. Later on, Barrow will only be stopped with a bloody revolution. Step up Johnny. Let the power of the people depose Barrow of the Power he wants to possess. The people need leadership.
