Show Me Video Competition to showcase impressive Belizean talent

The international filmmakers will also provide advice to BAVIA, which is in the process of selecting a winner for its Show Me video competition.  It organized a program with the film festival and Smart that challenged high school students to create a three to five minute movie that shows off their skill level and creativity for a chance to win one thousand dollars. The deadline for submissions has passed and BAVIA president, Javier Molina, says he’s impressed with the videos they have received.

“The deadline was on the fourteenth at midnight. I’m happy to say we actually have a total of nine completed entries that came in. Some people unfortunately, for whatever reason, weren’t able to get their productions done but we do have nine; three of them per category. So it’s good, it’s actually pretty evened out. So I’m very excited. We sat down last night with the first group to watch it but we’re going to be sitting down with a couple of the international directors that are here to get their input and their feedback and I really must say I’m really excited with what I’ve been seeing.”

“This competition is a first for you all, has it turned out to be what you were expecting?”

Javier Molina

“Yes, it is our first competition but definitely not going to be our last. We’re planning on making this an annual thing. From what I’ve seen, very, very excited; the level, the quality, the creativity. Some of them really did surprise me the way they were done and I’m very happy. I’m so excited that we did it and what we got back is going to be very good and I hope that the Belizean public comes out and sees what these young people are capable of doing.”

“So we have some undiscovered production talent.”

Javier Molina

“Definitely, really and truly we do. We have people who are very creative and know how to use the camera. And I don’t want to give it away but there is one that didn’t even use any video production skills as such, it was all animated. That’s the one that shocked me and it was really well done so I’m very happy and excited about that. It’s only gonna bigger, it’s only gonna get better. The prizes are going to get more attractive. The fact that it’s gonna be in the festival it should be a plus for people. It’s an international festival; we have people coming from all over especially this year. We have people who are looking specifically for talent; specifically looking for actors or musicians so it’s an avenue that you can get discovered.”

The winner of the competition will be announced at an award ceremony on Tuesday.
