Toledo Villager accused of bludgeoning sister-in-law

Now to a tragic story from the community of Jalacte in the southernmost reaches of the Toledo District. It involves a family feud over the weekend that left a twenty-two year old woman dead and police are on the hunt for her brother-in-law.  Rafael Ack, a Guatemalan national, became involved in a verbal altercation with Sabrina Ack over a parcel of land in the village.  The argument quickly escalated to violence when he allegedly swung a piece of wood at her head, rendering her unconscious.  Despite efforts to rush her to town, Ack succumbed to her injury while en route to Punta Gorda.  PG police are working along with their Guatemalan counterparts on the trail of the suspect whom they believe has fled the country since the violent incident on Sunday.

“At 3:15 p.m. on Sunday the tenth of July 2011 when police visited the Punta Gorda Town Hospital where they saw the lifeless body of a female who was later identified to the police as Sabrina Ack, twenty-two years, domestic of Jalacte Village.  Investigations revealed that around 1:00 p.m. that same day she was cleaning a piece of land there when her brother-in-law Rafael Ack arrived there and had an argument [with her] because of the land.  As a result Rafael Ack took a piece of stick, the stick is used to plant corn, and hit her behind her head causing her to fall on the ground.  She was later transported to the Punta Gorda Hospital but on her way to the hospital she died.  So far Rafael Ack is on the run.  Checks have been made for him but so far all investigations reveal that he has fled the country.  He’s a Guatemalan national and as we all know Guatemala, Jalacte from Belize is at the borderline with Guatemala so it was easy access for him to get out of the country.”

“Sergeant Victorin can you establish whether or not this was an ongoing feud over this particular plot of land?”

Via Phone: Sgt. Octavio Victorin

“We do not have that information.”

Isani Cayetano

“What are the residents or the family of Sabrina Ack saying in terms of how this argument came about over this piece of land?”

Via Phone: Sgt. Octavio Victorin

“The police so far have recorded statements from one witness that was around there.”

Isani Cayetano

“In terms of the way this particular issue is now being treated seeing as though the village borders Guatemala have you guys gotten in touch with your counterparts to deal with this particular issue of this person fleeing across the border?”

Via Phone: Sgt. Octavio Victorin

“The relevant information has been relayed to our counterparts there because we have a good relationship with them.”

Isani Cayetano

“I’m assuming that an all points bulletin has been issued for Rafael Ack both in Belize and in Guatemala should he cross over back into our territory?”

Via Phone: Sgt. Octavio Victorin

“Yes that has been done already.”

It is the second time within a week that Punta Gorda police have had to make the journey to the distant village which is situated near the Belize/Guatemala border.  They recently investigated the circumstances surrounding the death of a newborn in Jalacte. A dog was found dragging the infant’s dismembered body.
