James Adderley’s cavity free and jaw clenching sports update

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

Week six of the Belize Bank Super League playoffs brought with it a bang that would be heard all over the country. In fact, the peninsula of Placencia was the place where the defending champion R.G. City Boys made its final bid for a return to championship in a positively pressure packed match yesterday against a surging Placencia Assassin.  Of course, a draw would get City Boys the opportunity for a third straight Super League title while the Assassin needed all three points to make it to the finals as the kick-off gets underway. The first real threat at goal comes Placencia’s way off this spot kick launched by Elias Donair to Ashley Torres who deals to Dillon Torres but his header travel just outside the sticks. Donair then tries this trick splice right o top the eighteen that looks good but wouldn’t fool Stanley Reneau today. We’re some half an hour into the action when eighteen year old Luis Torres fires this set piece just outside the box and the youngster bends it perfectly to beat Stanley Reneau as the Assassin takes a 1-zip lead. Just before the half expires, Assassin captain, Dalton Eiley, gets around Mark Grant whose defensive pressure leads to inadvertently kneeing Eiley on the thigh which forces the team leader to leave the pitch in agony. He would return in the second half but not for long.

Immediately into second half, City Boys goes offensive as Leon Jones sends this beauty to Deon McCauley whose deft left foot touch is denied by an outstanding save from Marcel Logan. Some fifteen minutes after intermission, Dalton Eiley succumbs to the thigh injury and has to be helped off the field of play. Naturally, things get a bit sticky when Dalton Torres feels that he was fouled by Elroy Kuylen but the moment passes and we must say Kuylen did not produce his usual stellar performance in his debut with City Boys. Folks, City Boys get this opportunity to tie the score when Leon Jones picks out Deon McCauley but the striker finds himself a step behind the play. People, this is how problems develop for the referees. Shannon Flowers is obviously taken down by tom Hitchcock in like manner for which he gets another yellow card and is forced off the field. Another flare up occurs when Jason Young and Marcel Logan clash bodies on this play and the Placencia goalkeeper  makes a meal out of the contact trying to force another yellow card on the City Boys player, but it doesn’t work on referee Carballo. Now tell me folks, how does a skilled veteran like Wilmer Garcia fail to score on this empty goal? Well, we will just say these are the breaks.

Placencia Assassin goes on to post the 1-zip big W and guess what they’re going into the championship round atop the standings with 10 points. R.G. City Boys finishes with 9 points and thanks to Orange walk United holding Paradise Freedom Fighters to a scoreless draw at Punta Gorda, City Boys make it to the finals to defend their title. Meanwhile, the Super League intends to take a week off before beginning the three game finals between City Boys and Placencia as both teams complain of injury. Thus game one should get off on July twenty-fourth at the MCC Grounds. We were also made to understand that the Assassin will have to play their home game at the Michael Stadium since the league has determined that the Placencia football field is not quite regulation size so stay tuned.

In other football news, the Stars U-16 football summer camp for males and females got off today inside the MCC Grounds and is scheduled to conclude on July twenty-second. To get in, contact Stanley Reneau at 627-4041.

In softball news, male play at the Roger’s Stadium on Friday saw Smart Santos wallop the police 17-zip while Team 313 prevailed over Strikers in an 8-3 final score. This Thursday at 7p.m. the police will try to rebound against Strikers. Also coming up today, Monday, is the Belize City female playoffs as the number one seed Telemedia faces a challenge from the number two seed, Hurricane.

Turning to the Cycling scene, some ten riders answer the call to participate in the Gerald Garbutt Mountain Bike Race staged yesterday. And here there are taking off from in front of Leslie’s Imports, through the Boom Road en route to Garbutt’s Farm at mile twenty-four and a half on the Northern Highway. Ryan Willoughby makes the first move bursting out of the pack to win the station prize at mile eight. However, by the time the race passes through Hattieville, the man on the pace is footballer Vallan Simms. Vallan would go on to sweep the premies including, Bull’s Place, the prison, Boom Bridge, Ray Catt’s residence and Danis Bank. Andrew “Pawpa” Brown then tracks down Simms and here is saying his goodbye to the rider whom he has just overtaken. Brown wins the station prize at Medina’s residence and here he is crossing the finish line at Garbutt’s Farm to take top honors. Vallan simms settles for second, Kenroy Smokie Gladden pulls up third, Ryan Willoughby is fourth while Fred Usher rounds out the top five.

Jah overall, I’m James Adderley.
