Fire engulfs businesses in heart of San Ignacio

A fire broke out in a congested area of San Ignacio this afternoon. Traffic came to a halt when a plume of smoke towered above the downtown area.  The Fire Department was immediately called to the scene of the blaze which destroyed a large building. The fire threatened to engulf other structures, but neighbors in the business district also lent a hand to prevent the flames from taking the neighborhood. News Five spoke to Chris Carridi of Greedy’s Pizzeria which is located next door to where the fire started. According to Carridi, several businesses and a family were affected by the fire on Burns Avenue.

“I was out purchasing goods when my staff called me that the premises next door was on fire. So I immediately responded to the scene and I saw the building next door to us engulfed in flames. Me and my staff and another friend of mine climbed on the roof of our building and started watering it down while the fire department was setting up and starting to do their preliminary work. They did a good job in securing the fire and stopping the fire from spreading to other buildings. The fire department actually did the best work they’ve ever done in Cayo today that I’ve seen here in the seven days I’ve lived up here and had business here. The fire destroyed the upper level of a house and destroyed two businesses and a storeroom as well.”

“Are you aware if anyone was injured?”

“Not at this point we aren’t aware. There was two young girls upstairs alone when the fire started on the second floor. The mother seemed to have been out at the Minister’s office doing some work or something when the fire started. The two young girls were fled out of the building and were taken to the hospital but they didn’t seem to be hurt or if they had anything they were minor. They were crying.”

“For people who don’t know the area well, this is a very important area for commerce in San Ignacio right?”

Via Phone: Chris Cariddi

“Yes it is. It’s the main street, Burns Avenue, where all the stores, bars and restaurants are located—right across the street from Venus Hotel, one of the major landmarks here. The San Cas building is right next door and of course, Greedy’s Pizzeria. The damage; the whole building is destroyed and gutted. I would estimate the damage to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars in building and equipment that was inside the building. But so far everybody seems to be ok.”
