Chamber of Commerce special meeting; members mostly militant

This coming Monday, the government will be going back to the House with legislation to renationalize Belize Telemedia. That legislation has not been seen by most members of the National Assembly but will be introduced, fiercely debated, passed and then signed off on – all in a matter of hours. The speed at which it will go through the different stages is a cause for alarm, as is, what many believe to be the perceived official flaunting of the rule of law. The debate on this issue is raging in many sectors, particularly in the private sector. This morning the Belize Chamber of Commerce convened a special meeting, members were mostly militant and expressed alarm at the recent turn of events where it affects private property and the disregard for the ruling of the Court of Appeal last Friday. The Chamber’s representative, Senator Godwin Hulse, was given the mandate to take their membership’s view to the senate floor and is not on the side of the government. Hulse, who has taken on many challenges, will craft his statement to also reflect the disrespect to Senators, who will receive copies of the legislation just prior to the sitting. The Chamber is also calling an emergency meeting for early next week; it’s a call to arms, so to speak on the next course of action.
