2008 holidays feature ample long weekends

New Year’s is just one of the thirteen public and bank holidays celebrated in Belize, so if you’re counting down to your next vacation, get your pen and calendars ready. According to the revised list put out by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the first long weekend falls on March tenth, a Monday, in observance of Baron Bliss Day. Easter comes early with a March appearance, running from Good Friday on the twenty-first to Easter Monday on the twenty-fourth. Labour Day, May first, falls on a Thursday and remains there. Sovereign’s Day, perhaps better known as Commonwealth Day, will be celebrated on Monday, May twenty-sixth in lieu of the twenty-fourth, which is a Saturday. After that, the holidays go on hiatus until September tenth, which government is now calling National Day instead of St. George’s Caye Day. It falls midweek on a Wednesday. Independence Day is actually on Sunday, September twenty-first, but the Monday will be given as the holiday. Another long weekend comes on Monday, October thirteenth for Pan American Day, also in lieu of a Sunday. Garifuna Settlement Day falls on a Wednesday and will be celebrated on that day. Christmas and Boxing Day will provide a four-day weekend as December twenty-fifth is a Thursday and the twenty-sixth a Friday. As you mark your calendars you may also notice that 2008 is a leap year and February, therefore, has twenty-nine days.
