Crowds still seek citizenship in Belmopan

Exact numbers are still hard to come by but word out of the capital city tonight is that the wave of people lining up to become Belizeans continued today. According to reporters at Plus TV in Belmopan, the crowd was only slightly smaller than yesterday but we can confirm that the applicants are being brought in by candidates of both the United Democratic Party and the People’s United Party. As we reported on Tuesday, as many as a thousand residents who had previously applied for citizenship showed up to complete their paperwork and take the oath of allegiance during consecutively scheduled ceremonies at the George Price Centre, which we understand, continued until after dark. We were unable to reach officials in the Immigration Department to find out why the usually slow moving process was now being run so efficiently, but as far as we know there have not been any documented allegations that unqualified applicants, namely those with less than five years residency, are being given Belizean citizenship. The crowds in Belmopan should ease considerably later in the week as Thursday is the last day for Belizeans to register to vote in the upcoming election.
