Phone Company tower falls on home during windstorm

After the country went to bed on Thursday night, many homes were thrust into darkness after midnight. It wasn’t the start of the rolling blackouts signaling nonpayment to Comisión Federal de Electricidad of Mexico. The blackouts coincided with very strong winds and rains that pounded Belize City to the northern districts.  It was a freak weather event of sorts whose tempest winds left very visible reminders of its strength. News Five’s Jose Sanchez Reports.

Jose Sanchez, Reporting

A work crew from the telephone company Smart was busy picking up the pieces after a strong thunderstorm attacked half of the country. One of the company’s towers broke from its base on the roof of a concrete building and collapsed on the roof at number 83 Antelope Street Extension. The occupant of the home, was under the structure enjoying a regular inebriated casino night with neighbors when it came crashing down.

“We do know that the tower fell from its base, its foundation. We are in contact with the engineers who designed the structure to come in and do an assessment for us in terms of what caused the failure.”

Jose Sanchez

“Is there any damage to the actual service in the area?”

Ernesto Torres

“No, this base station is part of the new 3G network. It is going to set us back a bit but we are in the process already to establish contingency plans to restore another station in the area.”

Jose Sanchez

“And because the tower did fall on a residence house, what will Smart be doing to help these people?”

Ernesto Torres

“Well the first priority obviously is to get the tower removed from the roof and the other step after that is to get in contact with the owners of the house because it is our intent to do any repairs necessary to restore the structure to what it original was.”

Jose Sanchez

“So the smart people tell you they will hook you up?”

Teddy Rhaburn

“Well I don’t know but I tell them look, unu have to give me a new brand house? Well dah mi daughter will deal with this now, this is nothing funny.”

Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

The home owner, Teddy Rhaburn says that the house was built for him by his daughter. Smart has contacted her regarding the home repairs.

I think the home owners deserve a brand new house! Old brings new!

I think he deserves a new house as well. It will only be courteous of the company to give him the new house because of the inconvenience and the fear that the owners had. Imagine what could have happened.
