Ted Armstrong freed after jailed since 2006

Ted Armstrong

Thirty-five year old Ted Armstrong was escorted in shackles when he arrived at court today but walked away a free man having spent five years behind bars. Armstrong was twice tried for murder but convicted of manslaughter and was serving a twelve year sentence. Armstrong challenged the Supreme Court decision and got the news this morning that the Court of Appeal had quashed the conviction and set aside the sentence. The Judges found that the trial judge misdirected the jury by saying that even if they had doubts as to whether Armstrong acted in self defense, they could still convict him. Armstrong has been in jail since July, 2006 after Jerome Longsworth was stabbed to death. Longsworth, who had intervened in a fight between Armstrong and his sister, was stabbed on the neck with a pair of scissors. One eyewitness claimed that Longsworth tried to run away, but Armstrong pursued and pounced on him when he fell into a hole. According to Dr. Mario Estradabran, the scissors ruptured several veins, arteries and one of his neck muscles. Armstrong was first tried before Justice Michelle Arana in August, 2009 but the case had to be aborted when a witness made a prejudicial statement in the presence of the jurors. His re-trial ended in a conviction on October twenty-ninth, 2010.
