Price of butane goes up for 2 companies

Butane importers have been meeting with government officials over the past few days, demanding a massive hike in the controlled price. The importers say that acquisition costs have increased by fourteen dollars since the start of the year and they want the market price go up by that amount. Today the Ministry of Economic Development issued a release announcing that an eight dollar increase was granted to Belize Gas Limited and Western Gas Company Limited that buy from Pemex in Mexico.  For Belize City and Corozal that takes the price per hundred pound cylinder to one hundred and thirty four dollars.  Prices in Orange Walk increase to one hundred and thirty five dollars.  In the west, the price is at one hundred and thirty-six dollars in Belmopan and San Ignacio while in Benque Viejo, butane is selling for one hundred and thirty-seven dollars. And in the south, the prices now sit at a hundred and thirty-eight and a hundred and thirty-nine dollars in Dangriga and Punta Gorda respectively. Again, those prices only apply when purchasing from Belize Gas and Western Gas Company. Belize Western Energy Limited, Southern Choice Butane, Zeta Gas and Gas Tomza all import from within Central America and are not affected by the price hike.

As for the new butane regulations, the release says that six businesses have complied with the Statutory Instrument and the Belize Bureau of Standards is pursuing legal action against all suppliers who have not yet acquired proper weighing instruments.

The thieves should not have been allowed to increase the butane price yet because they need to refund the poor Belizeans. On the Island the stealing continues because every time I refill my small tank I am short by 3 to 5 pounds out of 25. Imagine how much is being stolen from larger tanks. They are now using a scale which seems to have been abandoned here by Christofer Columbus. It is a weight and bar system that cannot be read by the customers standing near by. The pump attendant who is moving the weight along the bar can mistakenly or intentionally place the weight at the wrong position or the weight can be easily altered.
There is also the suspicion that they may have been serving their San Pedrano friends correctly to have them on their side while stealing from others because I can see some of them very happy at the gas pump.
I am waiting to see a sealed scale that can be read by customers at the pump or put these people behind bars. Let someone else get the business.
