P.U.P. will choose new executive on Sunday

Story PictureHe was elected as P.U.P. leader at the end of March and this Sunday Johnny Briceño will get the opportunity to put his personal stamp on the party’s machinery. The national convention, to be held in Briceño’s back yard at Orange Walk’s People’s Stadium, will elect a new National Executive. That body, which includes the leader plus twenty-four other officers, is likely to include a mix of the old and new with an emphasis on unifying the once fractured party. Key posts to be filled are the three deputy leader positions formerly held by Godfrey Smith, Vildo Marin and Briceño himself, as well as the party chairmanship which belonged to Briceño’s rival, Francis Fonseca. Fonseca will be a key player in Sunday’s process and as an olive branch from Briceño, will likely receive a nomination as one of the three deputy leaders or at least return to his old post of party chairman. As for Briceño supporters Mark Espat and Cordel Hyde, at least one will be on the ballot for deputy leader and the three area reps will meet Tuesday morning to talk things over. According to party secretary Henry Usher, nominations for all twenty-three vacant posts will be accepted in advance or from the convention floor. Usher’s own post is the only one that will not be decided on Sunday as the secretary generalship will be decided by the newly elected executive. Usher told News Five that as a loyal P.U.P. he always remains ready to serve his party and his country.
