Women’s Department’s Single Mother’s Project

Arlette Abraham Thompson

The Women’s Department is encouraging Belize City women to sign up for its Supporting Single Mother’s Project. Successful applicants will learn a trade and after the course, the department will help them with job placements. It’s an opportunity for the women to empower themselves and gain financial independence, which also benefits their children. Arlette Abraham, the Job Placement Officer at the Women’s Department, is encouraging women to apply as early as possible for available spaces.

“The Women’s Department is in its fourth cycle of the Supporting Single Mother’s in Belize City Project. The project offers skill training in four areas; namely sewing, child care, housekeeping and cosmetology. Single mothers get to choose one of the four skill training areas. After they are selected, we do one month of orientation and four months of actual skill training.  Apart from the skills training, you get personal development sessions which includes work ethics, anger management, preparing for an interview. After the program is continued you get a certificate and where possible, we try to place you in the area that you were trained in.”

“So you want to encourage women to sign up?”

Arlette Abraham Thompson

“We’re asking all interested single mothers to visit the Women’s Department at twenty-six Albert Street and fill out an application so we can process them and we’re looking to start the cycle on April fourth, so the sooner they do it the better it will be.”

“Is there any particular criteria regarding who can apply?”

Arlette Abraham Thompson

“Basically, we’re just looking for single mothers; mother’s who are supporting their child or children by themselves. They can come in and we fill out the application with them, they need to bring a copy of their Social Security Card and we process the application from there.”

The program is offered by the Women’s Department free of cost.
