Year’s 30th murder committed in Corozal

After almost two days without deadly violence, tonight Corozal police are investigating the thirtieth homicide of 2008. Police reports are that around ten thirty on Tuesday night eighteen-year old San Antonio villager Stanley Matura, twenty-three year old Timothy Sanker and a minor were in front of the San Antonio Government School when two men with rags over their faces and armed with a shotgun, rode up and started shooting. Investigations have since revealed that Matura was the intended target and while some of the pellets grazed his head, the majority missed. Dazed by the attack, Matura fell to the ground and his two companions fled to the rear of the school. The assailants then took off on their bikes, heading towards Olga Marin Drive. And that’s where it appears a freak coincidence had deadly consequences. Coming from the opposite direction on a bicycle on the same street was eighteen year old Erlin Matura, Stanley’s first cousin. Erlin and one of the assailants collided and as the teenager lay on the ground, the gunman shot him at close range. This time the pellets pierced the victim’s chest, under his arm pit and in the left arm. The wounded man ran but collapsed in a nearby yard. He was rushed to the Corozal Hospital but a doctor there pronounced him dead on arrival. Investigators believe when the gunman saw Erlin they thought he was on his way to help Stanley. The surviving Matura was admitted to the Northern Regional hospital for treatment but he discharged himself earlier today. Police have detained one man and are seeking another for questioning but up to news time no arrests had been made in connection with the killing. The murder weapon has not been recovered.
