Senseless Sunday morning shooting of car van and house

The corner of Prince Street and West Canal is becoming a regular fixture in the news. We’ve reported on two murders and one attempted murder of a store clerk in the past months all within a twenty yard range. And early Sunday morning was no different, a gunman decided to unleash his clip on the street corner.  Luckily no one was hurt.  A shot was fired into a window of a two- storey wooden house at number eighty seven West Canal while Melonie Batty was asleep.  A bullet found its mark on the headlight of a van parked across the street, while another broke through the windshield. The windshield of a 1996 Saturn car was shot twice, shattering the rear windshield. The owner of the car, a Belizean American, who asked that his name be withheld out of fear for his life, says he decided to retire in Belize and bothers no one. He has no idea why anyone would damage his car but hopes someone would help him find a used windshield.

Thank God no one died. Many of us dreamed of retiring & returning to home to live out our days, then we go home, we read the news & reality sets in. Good luck finding a used windshield.

Retirees have been murdered in Belize before, or victimized as well. Belizeans gave up their lives in Belize to work, save money and then return home to live the dream, but instead the Belize they once knew is no longer there.

no one should visit belize anymore since the belizeans dont have the cohones to drive out this useless and corrupt gov. all tourist please dont come to belize anymore you will eighter be robbed or killed so please go elsewhere or you will be sorry you came here stay away or die.resign barrow resignnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

  4. Eddy Ferguson says:

With all the murders and killing continues in Belize, it is sad to call Belize home, anymore. Why should people living abroad and in the states want to visit Belize or retired their. Belived me, it is safer living in the hood; in the states, than living in Belize City. The Government, is not doing enough. It seems like everybody that wants a GUN can get one, Plus, the justice system let the criminals go freee way too often, because the witnesses are afraid to testify. Belize is now a sad place to live…

  5. Eddy Ferguson says:

How can criminals with long rap sheets, walk around with conseal weapons? Belize need new laws and more power given to the police, so that they can check these criminals randomly…..

  6. Disgusted! says:

I like Rod. Straight to the point. Every tourist should stay away from Belize. It’s not worth the risk of life and limb. As to the politicians, both red and blue needs to flush themselves down $h!tcreek. We have had enough!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Storm says:

If the police or BDF cannot station a patrol at this hot-spot, then they should install hidden surveillance cameras.

Apparently PM Barrow is too weak to do anything effective to stop the criminal rampage.

  8. CEO says:

Hey Rod you need to think before you speak! I am not fund of any politician but I believe in fair play: Crime did not just come alive in Belize over the last three years. This problem started way back when the last crowd was there. Barrow inherited the mess that is there.

The problem is most/many Belizean government employees are on the take: Think no guns are manufactuired in Belize they all cross the boarder so start there someone is looking the other way when they come in. Police officers are some of the biggest crooks. This is where the problem is.

  9. louisville,ky says:

Disgusted, I thought you and Rod were one and the same individual. It is indeed interesting how two seperate entities could have the exact mind set every time. hmmmm!!

  10. Gilda says:

It has always been that Belizean living abroad will one day return to the Jewel, but as we who visit often and stay in touch with what is going on, this is not the same Belize that we left, it is all memories,… physically there have been some changes, but the greatest change from my experience, are the people.. Where are my people? living abroad…. I do not know the people, in Belize city. Before as Belizean we knew the families in the hood and live at peace with each other. Now we live amongst strangers. My neighbors are Hispanic, they rent don’t want to speak English, and don’t care about the property, they live in garbage and filth, I try to reach out to them when I visit but to know avail… The politicians say we are one Belize but I don’t think so, I understand from their perspective, but nevertheless, I see it as a culture war going on. People don’t care about each other..
I tried to preserve my home, take care of my property so one day I can return and leave it all for my grandchildren, but I don’t see that happening. It is time for a reality check, we cannot live in the past…..

  11. D-Power says:

Poverty, lack of education and job opportunities are just some of the issues that makes a perfect incubator for crimes and other illegal activities. The educated criminals are running this country PUP or UDP doesn’t matter. This countries crime problem will get far worse before it gets better due to deep seated issues at many levels.
I’m frightened just reading the many accounts of crimes committed by people in respected positions as by people in the general population. The message is out kill someone in Belize you are free, steal five dollars you get five years. What a joke.

  12. The People Had Enough says:

o.k. the media have pinpointed that this area is hot; ok, does the police know this area is hot with crime? If so, what are they doing about it?

Also, Rod you are an idiot, every damn country, city, town, village on this planet has crime. The very first visit I took to Chicago; not 15 minutes later we saw on the news some sick !@# robbed a grocery store and killed everyone in it, including customers, this was only 13 blocks from where we were staying in a nice, quiet suburban area of Chicago.

Most of the crime hotspots are known by the cops; the GOB and everyone else, but nothing serious is being done about it, they also know the players that cause all the problems, yet they roam the streets, why? I have no idea.

Tell the EU/UN to stick it and we start hanging these …….., do a country wide clean up of the scumbags and start fresh. But, i agree, Belizeans no worry about $#!% until the stone hit them in the head.

  13. rod says:

ceo you said it its been three years now you cant blame the previous gov. now three years is a long time and in those three years every single thing in this country is the worse its ever been in the history of belice every aspect of life is worse what does that tell you ceo and thepeoplehadenough and louisville the three of you need to come to belize and live it instead of talking bull from afar come live it and see what its like worse gov and pm in the history of this country if one of you can name me one thing that is better under this gov. i would welcome it.

  14. Earl Grey says:

He should have put the gun to his head……….and SAVE US ALL A HEADACHE!!!!!

  15. j killa baby borther says:

Raymond killa Gentle says , goodeven belize , hold it down south side gs kraal road hold it down …

  16. Sugar Queen says:

Iam a proud Belizean living in the state there is no place like home. Those poeple who say dont go to belize are rude and selfish they dont think that crime will increase. BELIZE is mother nature best keep secret I love my country no matter what. Crime is every where even here in the state. The thing you go thought here in this country you never experience it at home majority poeple are rude and disrespectful.

  17. Byrd says:

The Gov. in Belize needs to implement the (3) strike law that is in place in Califronia; to minimize the murders and shooting in Belize. Because it seems like most of the criminals are repeat offenders.
Three strikes and you’re put away for LIFE….
