3 week old baby going to Venezuela for Heart Surgery

Shantel Carr

On Thursday night we reported on three-week old Shantel Carr, whose congenital heart requires surgery.  The baby’s family publicly asked for support to raise funds for her to undergo the corrective surgery but as soon as the story was aired,  the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where the baby was delivered, told News Five that they have secured medical assistance for the baby.   Chief Medical Officer at the K.H.M.H., Doctor Bernard Bulwer, told News Five that baby Shantel will be taking a trip south to Venezuela.

Dr. Bernard Bulwer, Chief Medical Officer, K.H.M.H.

“From the point of children like this is the Rotary Program and in the Venezuelan Program, they are not required to take any money out of their pocket. I wish not just for this child but cases of health issues in the future: what is the role of the K.H.M.H.? We should be the people that they should go to at least to find some kind of direction and help. I don’t think it is fair for patients on their own to try to find care for things that we don’t get in Belize. I think that is our job. I also think that I would like—the public has other stuff to deal with—let us deal with stuff like this. We do have stuff in place. One of my main preoccupations is how to internationalize the services of the K.H.M.H. Hear what we can do for a child like this? They need to get back in touch with us. But even before that, I have the images; those images can be sent today to the rotary people and the contacts with the Venezuelans be made within a day or two.”

“So it is at that point that you are at now?”

Dr. Bernard Bulwer

“Yap, it’s at that point. I think I will ask the pediatricians to make contact with that family and so that they can come to us. They are not on their own, that’s the message: they are not on their own. That’s what the K.H.M.H. ought to be here for and that’s what I’m here for.”

In addition to the offer by the K.H.M.H. to find a placement in Venezuela for baby Shantel, President of the Rotary Club of Belize’s Gift of Life Programme, Yvette Burkes, says the Rotary Club has been finding hospitals to also provide advance surgery and treatment for children for many years and agrees with Dr. Bulwer that the family does not need to raise funds for the procedure.

Good news indeed. I only hope the family wasn’t trying to exploit the situation for their own personal gain. I say this because I know 2 of the sisters very personally but I will leave it at that so as not to cast aspersions on anyone.

Good work Dr. Bulwer. See what we get when we have people at the helm that are truely concerned about the welfare of the less fortunate? By the way, is this the brother of Abdus Salaam Ahmad formerly known as Berris Bulwer, soil scientist at the Min. of Works? Indeed, Bulwer[ark] of the Belizean fabric!!!!
