Leader of the Opposition speaks about Sugar Industry woes

After hearing about the Banco Atlantida proposal, the Leader of the Opposition John Briceño contacted B.S.I.  Briceño says that no one at B.S.I. is aware of the offer and instead of entertaining offers for a buyout, the government’s effort should be concentrated on assisting with finding a financier for the multi- million dollar debt.

John Briceño

“Most people were surprised or shocked because I spoke to people at B.S.I. and they are saying that they have never heard of any such offer that Banco Atlántida wants to buy B.S.I. But again, if you look at the Prime Minister, he skillfully moved away from it: well they want to buy, but the problem is that it is in a trust fund owned by B.S.I. workers—saying that because of that we can’t sell. The truth is there is no offer. So I don’t know how the Prime Minister then would make that announcement that Banco Atlántida had expressed interest. What we know that by come March, B.S.I. is going to be needing another ten, another twenty million dollars and they were hoping that Tate and Lyle would lend them the money. I don’t know to this date if that has already been worked out. But I hope that that is worked out because if we don’t get that twenty million dollars then B.S.I. is going to find themselves into another problem.”

Earl Grey, I’ve noticed you just criticize but never really offer any anything constructive. I think if you take that stance on everything you’re also becoming part of the problem? What are you doing to better Belize? Sitting in front of your computer all day isn’t helping anyone.
I’m actively involved in my community. I volunteer at the local library and also for Helpage. Instead of just whining about everything try to better Belize instead of waiting for someone else to do the job.
