Red Cross appeals for canned food, clothes

Story PictureAs one of the key players in times of crisis, this morning the Belize Red Cross activated its disaster response committee. According to Executive Director Lily Bowman, Red Cross employees and volunteers are already conducting assessments in Stann Creek, Toledo, Orange Walk and Corozal.

Lily Bowman, Dir. General, Belize Red Cross
“Our national intervention teams and other volunteers are out there actively gathering this information, as well as beginning to respond to assisting the people already in shelters in these affected areas. The greatest concentration, of course, will be in the Stann Creek district where it seems that people are most affected. So far we have been getting relief supplies getting ready to be shipped out to Stann Creek in the form of seven hundred blankets. We will be sending out hygiene kits, also, in the Red Cross centre they are cooking hot meals to be distributed within the shelters.”

Arturo Vasquez, Chairman, Belize Red Cross
“We’re only a few hours into this, so we continue to meet, this is our second meeting today. We had one this morning and another at three o’clock today and we will continue to get assessments and work hand in hand with the district branches to get the information and then to provide all the assistance that we can provide. We are asking people to bring to the Red Cross food and food items, canned stuff and perhaps whatever clothing you have.”

The Red Cross is asking that the clothing be sorted by gender and age and taken to their headquarters on Gabourel Lane in Belize City. And for those people in Belize City who may have been forced from their homes by rising waters, please note that Gwen Liz High is now open as a shelter. Also, if you have specific needs please call the Belize City Emergency Management Organisation at 227-0056 or 621-9222.
