Story PictureShe was a rising star on the local music scene who sought fame and fortune abroad. Instead, Cayo’s Maria Reimer finds herself in a Canadian jail, charged with the armed robbery of six Winnipeg Credit Unions. Reimer, who sang under the single name of Maria, moved from San Ignacio to Canada where she married and later separated from a Manitoba man. She took his last name and is now known as Emelda Marie Cuddy. At some point Cuddy attended university in Canada but according to press reports, may have developed a drug habit and fell in with a bad crowd. Winnipeg police say that between July and December six credit unions were robbed, with thieves taking a total of over thirty-five thousand dollars. The female suspect had her face covered during each heist and on two occasions was seen brandishing a weapon. Although police eventually identified the twenty-four year old as a possible suspect, they did not locate her until December seventh when she was stopped by U.S. border officials when she tried to enter the United States en route to a Green Bay Packers football game. Maria, who was interviewed by News Five in 2003, has been charged with four counts of Robbery, two counts of Robbery with a Weapon and six counts of Wearing a Disguise to Commit a Crime. Unconfirmed reports to News Five indicate that Maria has been granted bail and is still awaiting trial.
