Wanted: more blood donors

Story PictureSaturday will be celebrated as World Blood Donor Day in Belize and around the globe. To get the word out on this vital public service and in the hopes of recruiting new members, Belize’s Volunteer Blood Donor’s Association is holding a week of activities. According to First Vice President Ronald Stuart, people shouldn’t wait for a medical emergency to give blood.

Ronald Stuart, 1st V.P., Volunteer Blood Donor’s Association
“The association needs more persons to become volunteer donors because the work that we do is as a part of the overall healthcare system of Belize and as volunteers we want people to understand that there is a need to have an adequate and safe blood supply in Belize to take care of all the incidents and issues that arise from time to time that require blood and blood products.”

“During this week we have targeted several business places to talk to the employees both in the morning and in the afternoons and the activity that will culminate the week will be on Saturday at the foot of the Swing Bridge where we will be having an all-day fair from ten in the morning until five in the evening with music and entertainment. We’ll be passing out information to those who are will be visiting on the work of the association. We will be doing blood group so the person knows exactly what is their blood type, their haemoglobin level; what is the quality of the blood or the health of the blood and also to get donations from those who are able to give.”

To be a blood donor you must be at least eighteen years old and healthy.
