Wheat finally arrives; bread will bake tomorrow

Story PictureThe wheat that Belize Mills, the bakeries, and much of the nation have been waiting for, finally arrived today and is being made into flour as I speak. The first shipments Thursday morning will go to bakers across the country, many of whom had been forced to shut down due to the shortage. With regard to the price of bread, there still seems to be some uncertainty as government has yet to respond to the Bakers Association’s request for a fifty cent increase in the price of a sixteen ounce loaf. Until that happens, Belize Mills will reluctantly continue to allot each bakery a quantity of flour at below market rates. That arrangement, adopted as a temporary measure in April, was meant to cushion the blow of flour price increases to consumers for a short time. When asked about the bread situation this morning, the Prime Minister opted for a wait-and-see approach.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“I am inclined to look at it, I am inclined to understand and recognise that there are external circumstances that we must take account of but I am also inclined to point out that I saw several international reports indicating that the price of wheat has gone down from the high that we saw in February something like thirty odd to forty percent so we will have to look at the entire panorama before any decision is made.”

We are not sure what reports the Prime Minister has been reading but industry sources say that the price of the type of wheat imported into Belize is predicted to go up and not down.
