Police investigate robbery/murder off Coastal Road

Story PictureTonight Police are trying to piece together what appears to be a case of kidnapping, robbery and murder which occurred on Monday evening on a feeder road two miles into the Coastal Highway. And as News Five’s Marion Ali reports, the details are gruesome.

Marion Ali, Reporting
Investigations could offer very little information to the media but we do know the incident involved three gunmen and resulted in the death of twenty-two year old Emigdio Gomez and left twenty-seven year old Cornelius Schmitt with two bullet wounds in throat and abdomen.

Marion Ali
“Police say the two men were transporting a bulldozer from Belize City to Belmopan when somewhere near Hattieville they were held up at gunpoint. The robbers brought through the Coastal Road and down this dirt road where they shot them and left them for dead.”

Myrtle Clark, who lives about a mile away from where the incident occurred, told News Five that a badly wounded Schmitt came to her house for help.

Myrtle Clark, Helped Injured Victim

Marion Ali
“Ih neva seh weh dehn tek from ah?”

“No, ih just seh deh rob ah.”

Police recovered Gomez’ body at the crime scene. He was hanging from a tree in the jungle and was severely beaten and shot. The men’s families were at a loss when we met them today at the K.H.M.H.

Soledad Silva, Cousin of Murder Victim
“They flogged them, telling them that something was wrong with the truck. When they stepped out they took them in a car and took them to the Coastal Road.”

Marion Ali
“You think these guys, these robbers, were looking for them in particular or anybody at random?”

Soledad Silva
“I think that they knew that someone had wanted to buy the bull and it is believed that the same people were tracking … following them and then they knew where to stop. It was about five in the evening then they took them to the Coastal Road to a house then they started to ask the Mennonite for money.”

John Klassen, Relative of Shooting Victim
“He was coming out from Belmopan. He was going to carry a caterpillar to Shipyard so when they passed Hattieville they were coming in a car. They stopped him and when they stopped him I don’t know exactly they were talking but they carried them back to the Coastal Road and I don’t know exactly what was happening over there but the thing is that they found the driver of the truck dead this morning and Mister Schmitt, well he was not dead.”

Marion Ali
“Mister Schmitt knows who did this to him or why?”

John Klassen
“No, he doesn’t know why. He doesn’t have no idea.”

Marion Ali
“What di they take from him? It was a robbery right; a robbery attempt?”

John Klassen
“He had three hundred dollars with him that they took and that’s all as far as I know.”

Marion Ali
“So where is the equipment?”

John Klassen
“The equipment, they haven’t found it yet.”

Marion Ali
“And so they ordered him to drive or they took over command of the vehicle?”

John Klassen
“No, they took him out of the truck and put the guys in their car.”

Marion Ali
“And one of them drove off with the caterpillar equipment?”

John Klassen
“Yes, yes.”

Police have not yet detained anyone in connection with the incident.
