CitCo: Utility work downtown almost done

Since April, utility companies have been turning the streets of downtown Belize City inside out in an effort to upgrade their systems before CitCo begins its much anticipated paving project. But progress has not been painless and both pedestrians and motorists have been subjected to the inconvenience caused by blocked roads, congestion and a very bumpy ride. But tonight Deputy Mayor Anthony Michael is calling on Belizeans to hold out just a little longer as the utility crews say their work is almost done.

Anthony Michael, Deputy Mayor, Belize City
“They have confirmed with us by Friday of this week, all the road works and underground work … I know B.W.S. is now doing some testing on some of the lines to make sure there is no leak and everything is working well. B.T.L. has couple more manholes but they have confirmed that by Friday they should have all their work completed. I’m in consultation with the Ministry of Works along with our sitting engineer and after they are out the Ministry of Works will be sending in some engineers to do some soil testing, compaction work, to start doing some preliminary work to get ready for the paving of Albert and Regents. The actual paving like what we have indicated will only take two days and that will be done on a weekend and we’ll be asking all business to close off for those two days. So we figure within the next couple of weeks if God spare life and the weather cooperates, Albert and Regent should be completed.”
