Brazil assists victims of Tropical Storm Arthur

The Government of Brazil has stepped up to the plate to assist victims of Tropical Storm Arthur. Through its representative in Belize, Ambassador Roberto Coutinho, the country is generously donating twenty-three tons of food valuing one hundred thousand dollars. The fourteen hundred baskets of food will be handed over to NEMO and will provide the basic but precious commodities of rice, beans, sugar, cooking oil, powdered milk and corn beef. According to the Embassy of Brazil, the president of the friendly ally in the south, Luis Ignacio Lula, has expressed solidarity with Belize in the wake of the devastation and loss of lives caused by the storm on June first.

Earlier this week similar gestures came from the Western Union Foundation and the Belize Chamber of Commerce, who teamed up to bring relief to Arthur’s victims. Western Union matched, dollar to dollar, a financial donation by the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry to the efforts spearheaded by the Belize Red Cross. Jointly, the two organisations contributed a total of twenty thousand dollars to alleviate living conditions in the affected areas.
