CARE-Belize hosts annual open day

Story PictureToday the Community Agency for the Rehabilitation and Education of Persons with Disabilities, CARE-Belize, hosted an open day to highlight some small projects that parents can do to improve the lives of children with special needs. This morning Rehabilitation Field Officer Inga Sandoval told us about the display.

Inga Sandoval, Rehabilitation Field Officer
“This display is for parents who have children with disabilities to come in and see the adaptive aids that we’ve made for their children. Over the past five weeks we’ve had four occupational therapists here from Canada; two of them dealing with feeding issues and two on adaptive aids. The two who dealt with feeding issues, over the past five weeks, made a video for kids with disabilities. The video featured some of our very own CARE kids. They have children with different disabilities and they show how they eat and will assist parents in teaching them how to chew, swallow and drink. The two who dealt with adaptive aids, they did clothing adaption, feeding utensil adaption, and picture books for kids who are non-verbal. They did this tilt chair for kids who need supports to sit and this stander for kids who need support to stand up straight. Most of the things, except for the tilt chair and the stander, were made from things that we find around our house so they are very cheap and they don’t take a lot of time to make. So the little time and little time and little money that we spent making these things will make a big difference in our kids lives.”

CARE-Belize is located at twenty-five Gabourel Lane in Belize City, but has rehabilitation field officers in every district.
