Channel 5 responds to government advisory

The volume of support for this station has been overwhelming in the past twenty-four hours. As you know, Government on Tuesday announced what it says was a “suspension of normal relations with this station.” Since then the reaction has been fast and furious by our viewers at home and beyond our borders, including those international and regional affiliates with whom we are partners, on what is seen as a threat to the independence of the robust and independent media. In this context, we are writing to the government press office pointing out that their understanding of the factual position on the broadcast of the Belmopan Weekly is incorrect. We are drawing to their attention that the government has in fact misrepresented Clause 19 of the conditions of the License. Government writes that “the Licensee shall provide to the government one hour per week broadcasting time, free of cost, for broadcasting public service messages and programs produced by or channeled through the Ministry of Information. The allocation of such time shall be determined by the Ministry of Information.” What government did not say is that Clause 19 also states that “the actual time of broadcast should be determined in consultation with the Licensee.” What’s more, a copy of Belmopan Weekly was indeed and in fact aired by this station on the morning of Sunday, November twenty-first.

  4. Common Sense says:

Dont worry about the GOB, other sources of revenue will be found. As Bob reminded us “when one door closes, many more will open”.

Do not compromise. Keep digging and reporting the stories that this government (and future government, no matter political affiliation) does not want to be aired. By doing so, you are providing an absolutely essential service to all Belizeans (home and abroad). This is the winning ticket, as the support of all Belizeans will ensure longevity.

This is, in fact, a great opportunity. And no matter what our dictator dictates, please be reminded that his vindictiveness is nearing the end.

perdomo needs to go. Attacking Channel5 doesn’t change the fact that visas are going to somalis. they are terrorists passing through belize. but the government says its about a program which wasn’t run on channel 5. i know it sh ows every week on other channels. so i think perdomo should go and the program should show.

  10. proud Belizean says:

This PM is full of himself he is so arrogant the reason why he is doing this is because he knows that you will find more things about him and the other crooks we call Ministers. Get a back bone Mr. PM when Jules Vasquez used to get at Musa and Ralph they didn’t try to shut Channel 7 up they took all that an more. Your just too arrogant to be PM. CHANNEL 5 KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WE THE PEOPLE WANT YOU TO CONTINUE WHAT YOUR DOING. DONT LET THIS JERK OF A PM TRY TO SHUT YOU UP STAND UP THE PEOPLE WILL STAND UP WITH YOU

  11. Justice says:

Good, I am glad that it has also been known internationally. Please keep informing my Belizeans of the governmnet misconduct. I realised that there in no internet news for Channel 7 for yesterday, thank goodness for Channel 5! What is Baroow hoping to achieve? Justice will win in the ned but I do hope that in the interim Barrow does not make any more rash judgement calls. Not sure if he undersatnds what running a country means!

I love your website and will continue to visit it. Let me tell you that in San Pedro on the Reef Radio’s Morning Show on Thursday the Minister of Tourism, Minister Manuel Heredia stated “part of the reason why the press office took this position is because Channel 5 likes to “edit” press releases issued by G.O.B.” he also stated that other media houses read government press releases without editing. I wonder what Channel 5′s position on this would be?

  13. Hardworking Belizean says:

“The truth shall set us free”!!! Barrow & his corrupt government can’t handle the truth! You continue your excellent work News5 and bringing across to the entire Belizean nation the true colors of this corrupt, vindictive and heartless Government. Barrow’s witchhunt towards Aschroft has blinded him so bad to the point of not dealing with those pressing issues which are destroying our already fragile economy!! Stop trying to distract us from reality Mr. ain’t working! The people are suffering, crime is sky high and continues increasing and you’re trying to legalize these immigrants as Belizeans when you can’t even provide for us the 100% Belizeans of our beloved country!!! If you are so transparent Mr. Barrow, you ain’t got no beef with News5:-)!!!

  14. vigilante justice 316 says:

haha you go channel 5 expose the truth, don’t let the PM or anybody in the government try to get you to whitewash the news like channel 7. I read channel 7 articles and I can’t get a feel for what is important because everything is whitewashed with no insight and their comment section is nothing but the proverbial run around. The PM put out that announcement with only half the truth of clause 19, makes me wonder how many other half truths he expects us to sit and swallow without looking into it.

PM, you’re not the only one in this country who knows how to read and look up clause, maybe you should stop being a two faced hypocrite while practicing what you’re accusing channel 5 of doing. Which is only presenting half the facts to suit your agenda.

  15. Robert2 says:

Here in the U.S.A and around the world, the 4th estate, the media, is one of the keys to democracy working. Keep up the good fight Channel 5, DO NOT BACK DOWN! I hope that the press and TV news in America will pick up on what is it is happening in Belize. It will only be positive for Belize, a democracy loving, small nation of people good at the core (in spite of present tribulations). God bless Belize, God bless Channel 5.
