VIP and PUP condemn government’s embargo of Channel 5

While the UDP administration institutes an embargo against Channel Five, the other two political parties have come up with statements condemning the actions of the government.  Belmopan’s Vision Inspired by the People states that the government of Belize is not at liberty to discriminate as to which citizen gets public information in a specified manner and which does not.  VIP views this move by the government to be an extremely dangerous precedent that must be reversed immediately.

The People’s United Party also condemned the action against one of the only two National Television Stations in Belize.   Because the PUP sees government’s action as a vicious attempt to stifle freedom of the press, the party calls on the public to view this move by Government as a poorly masked attempt to suppress any criticism of Government’s action and in so doing monopolize and dictate fact based public opinion.  The release ends by saying “We find it irreconcilable that the Government will suspend relations with Channel 5 and Great Belize Productions at a time when this station is being rewarded internationally for excellence in journalism.  We stand with the Belizean people in defense of democracy, freedom of expression and freedom of the press.”

How big of you PUP & VIP. It is becoming more difficult to take any of these Politicians seriously. The responses from average Belizeans are more believable, the only thing we have to gain from the changes we seek is a country all of us can be proud of.

  6. True Belizean says:

They are doing this because the GOB does not want the Belizean public to know what is going on!!! and kudos to Channel 5 for being the one to do so…bring their dirty work out of the dark so that the Belizean people can know what is going on!!

He that knows that he knows not is a wise one, counsel him/her; but he that knows not, that he/she knows not, is a fool shun him/her. I respectfully suggest that “rod” get to know more of the world in which he lives in before he make such ludicrous statement about President Hugo Chaves. You know nothing about political management skill nor geo-politics. This kind of ignorance is the contributing factor that causes this country to be in the situation it now find itself. If you “rod” would come to understand the passion Mr. Chaves has for his country, you would realize why he put his life on the line to stand up to the big oil companies that have been taking advantage of his country for many, many years. While the multi national companies were reaping all the wealth of the country, they left the local politicians with the burden of taking care of the socio-economic problems. There are many bad mouthing that the Belize government is not getting a fair share from the oil, do you know why? Because they are all around weak.

Ask yourself the question “rod”, what did Belize get from Venezuela when those former oil companies had full control of the oil wealth of that country? And compare it to the benefits that Belize enjoy from that country since Chaves took over the leadership of his country. This man has a clear idea where he wants to take his country and the road he must take to get it to its destination Don’t be mist lead by the empty prapaganda coming from the other side. You owe it to yourself to know the facts. I hope I have given you some food for thought.

Earl, Manford, thank you for trying to help rod & Rizzo out. Isn’t it ironic that as much as the US complains about Hugo, they are still willing to ask for credit & buy his oil. He did exactly what Castro did 50+ years ago when his country was being used as a whorehouse & a place to be exploited by the wealthy.

  10. You made several nice points there. I did a search on the theme and found most people will agree with your blog.
