2 cops get their day in Court; one happy and the other jailed

Gilbert Hyde

A police officer, who beat serious criminal charges in 2008, won a countersuit for damages against the Attorney General today. Police Constable Gilbert Hyde was charged with Conspiracy to Commit Murder in a double homicide on February fourteenth, 2008. Hyde was riding on Central American Boulevard with well-known criminal figure, Ryan Felix when they heard two sets of gunshots. The men continued on their way and later found out that two men were killed and a third was injured in the shooting. Felix was detained as a suspect and when PC Hyde provided an alibi for him, he was accused of covering up for Felix. When he stuck to his story, Hyde was arrested and charged even though police had received a caution statement from one Gian Staine who confessed to the murders.

Derrick Gideon

After eighteen days behind bars, the interdicted cop saw the charges withdrawn due to a lack of evidence. Hyde sued the Attorney General’s Office and four officers: Allen Whylie, Aaron Guzman, the then COMPOL Gerald Westby and Gladimir Cu, for damages for the loss of liberty, mental anguish and indignity suffered as a result of the wrongful arrest and imprisonment. That case started in early July and Justice Minnet Hafiz handed down a ruling today awarding Hyde twenty thousand dollars plus five thousand for court costs.

Another cop was in court today, this time to face four forgery related charges. Derrick Gideon charged with two counts of Uttering a Forged Document and one count each of Possession of a Forged Document and Attempting to Obtain two thousand dollars from Heritage bank. Gideon allegedly tried to deceive Heritage Bank using a forged employment letter to apply for a loan of two thousand dollars. Gideon got into even more trouble when it was brought out in court that he was in violation of a twelve thousand dollars Supreme Court bail for a previous kidnapping incident in San Pedro in which he was implicated. He was remanded to the Hattieville prison.

Still, why is ANY police officer socializing with a notorious criminal? It obviously will impair his ability to enforce the law, as well as undermine the image of the entire department. Some well-known sayings come to mind:
“Show me a man’s friend, and I’ll show you the man.”
“Birds of a feather flock together.”
“If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.”

It’s time for honest Belizeans to come up with an alternative to a VERY compromised police department, like volunteer groups in every neighborhood.

well you see people like to accuse people in what they don’t see, so why they want to spoil people character, but thats just the way the authorities are running rite now ,but they have it coming, each fat fowl has his own Sunday and sometimes Monday

Riding down the street and catching up with someone you know who chose a different life from you does not automatically make one a crook, furthermore this is not a good definition for “socializing”. I have a couple friends who chose the hard way of life and if I see them I still talk to them but we do not “socialize”.

wow that’s 90,000 dollars in less than an year gov’t is giving to 2 of their own, what if there is a couple more police officers out there who were also wrongfully accused of crimes and forced to resigned by supervisors like jeffries. i hope they are getting the message and sue the gov’t for way much more than that way much more…
