Police statistics show increases in Murder and Theft

Story PictureWhen Commissioner of Police, Crispin Jeffries last briefed the media on crime statistics from January to August of 2009, there were some decreases in major crimes compared to the same period in 2008. The latest stats are out and in September the police report an increase in murders and thefts. There were nine homicides for the month, compared to five in August while theft increased by one. Notably, no incidents of rape were reported, but the cops dealt with three carnal knowledge cases this month. Meanwhile, reported burglaries have decreased from a hundred and eight to ninety eight and robberies remain at forty-nine. The different categories of petty crimes all show minor decreases. But that’s only for the month of September. Commissioner Jeffries summarized the statistics released for the beginning of the year to date.

Crispin Jeffries, Commissioner of Police
“We’ve seen increases in statistics for the month of September, the total figures. The figures that I have given out are figures for the period January to September twenty-eighth and those figures show four to five increase in robberies, burglaries and thefts. These figures are four percent, two percent, three percent of the total. This is what we have seen because of a cumulative amount from January to September. The overall figure is showing some slight decrease in particular in murders, rapes and aggravated burglaries for the month of September itself. We’ve seen small increases in robberies, thefts and burglaries, but those small increases add to those figures that I gave earlier to give the type of figures we’ve seen. So yes, we’ve seen some small increases in crime but not in any major way. We are seeing a spike in murders, over the last week and a half in September and we’ve been responding. And we’ve seen at least some clear ups and when I say clear ups I mean that it is likely that we are going to arrest and charge person or persons within not too distant times.”

According to the ComPol, most victims in recent crimes are known and targeted by their attackers for days before the incidents.
