Mother and daughter kidnapped by hitchhikers

And a housewife from the Caledonia Village and her daughter received quite a scare on Friday when they were unexpectedly attacked by hitchhikers. Thirty-four year old Elizabeth Chan reported that on Friday around midday she and her fourteen year old daughter were making their way from Santa Clara Village to Caledonia when they pulled over to check a mechanical problem. Upon stopping at the Northern Highway and Caledonia Road junction, four men approached and asked for a ride to the village. Chan generously obliged, not expecting that her act of charity would result in a frightening ordeal. The men got into the pan of the pickup but about five hundred meters from the junction, one of them pointed a sharp object to Chan’s throat whilst another grabbed her daughter around the neck. With no other choice, Chan says she stopped the vehicle and they were forced to get into the pan of the pickup. The four men found a tree and tied up Chan and her daughter before driving off with the pickup and Chan’s black bag containing personal documents and cash. Chan and her daughter were able to free themselves. Thus far the Police have recovered the vehicle and have detained two out of the four perpetrators: twenty-one year old Brandon Munguia Ortiz and twenty-six year old Jairo Canahui Reyes, both Guatemalan cane cutters from San Lorenzo Village in Orange Walk. Police continue to look for the other two.
