C.Y.D.P. burglarized by one of its own

Story PictureThe organisation was revitalised in April to help at-risk and underprivileged youths stay away from a troublesome future. But the Conscious Youth Development Programme became the target of a vicious attack by one of the same youths it endeavored to help. Deputy Director of C.Y.D.P., Kevin Cadle, told News Five today that their main suspect was one in whom the programme had placed a certain level of confidence and had visited the offices on the lower flat of the Housing Department on North Front Street the day before it was discovered vandalised.

Kevin Cadle, Deputy Dir., C.Y.D.P.
“This young person has been a young person that we had entrusted to a certain degree that we had them in a programme approximately two months ago, whereby they were coming here for job training and also to conduct a wilderness trek that we had conducted when we first came into the office. And so he was around us. We were seeking job opportunities for him and we were even looking at him becoming a messenger for us at one point.”

“It sounds as if though you know for sure who did this and that he acted single handedly. You kept on saying he.”

Kevin Cadle
“We would not, at this point, say that he acted alone but we are aware that he was the person who had done it. We believe that he went to the back of the office and released a board that we had to the back of the office so that he could have gained entry from through the back. Nobody was really aware of what was taking place because we have been so busy dealing with the crime and violence in the city that we were not even aware of what he had done. Later on in the evening we believe that he came back and conducted what he did by breaking into the offices.”

“But what led you to this one individual? I’m sure you have many youths in and out of your office.”

Kevin Cadle
“What led us to him was that in the area where he came from he was selling a digital camera and we know for a fact that the digital camera is from our offices. So when we heard about him selling a digital camera, we started investigating and the investigations led to him. Since then, the camera was returned and to the back of the office we found the computer that he had basically … it is alleged that he had stole.”

Marion Ali
“So, he went with what all?”

Kevin Cadle
“He went with a digital camera, he went with a radio, he went with a computer system; full computer system, flat screen, and he broke up couple of the office doors; kicked down doors.”

Police have since charged twenty-three year old Jermaine Cattouse, a resident of Rocky Road in Belize City, with burglary. Cattouse was deported from the U.S in 2007 on drug-related charges. He had spent most of his life in that country. Cadle says the C.Y.D.P. is willing to help Cattouse get his life back on track after he is through with the court process.
