Mayor: Albert and Regent Sts. to be completed in September

Story PictureAfter months of inconvenience and way past deadlines, the ride was smoother in downtown Belize City and residents today saw the first step of what will eventually be the transformation of the commercial hub of Belize City. But don’t hold your breath yet as according to Mayor Zenaida Moya, the grading of Albert Street will take a while longer but will all be worth the wait.

Zenaida Moya, Belize City Mayor
“Maheia’s will also be dealing with the sidewalk as it pertains to the stamp concrete sidewalk because what has been advised is that there cannot be any paving until the sidewalk is done. So the sidewalk has to be done and Maheia’s will be starting that tomorrow.”

“What does that mean in terms of how much longer we need to wait before we see Albert and Regent Street paved?”

Zenaida Moya
“Well, all indication tells us that it will be completed in September. We’re hoping that the weather will work with us and definitely in September. That’s the timeline that we’re working with. Again, it all has to do with the weather.”

Marion Ali
“We’ve heard this before; that it’s gonna be next week, then next month, and then we hear about the rain and we hear about the utility companies needing more time. How do you ensure your Belize city residents, especially those who will be partying, celebrating for the tenth and twenty-first that they will have a newly refurbished Albert and Regent?”

Zenaida Moya
“Again, we’re going by what the contractors are saying and what the Ministry of works engineers are telling us along with our own sitting engineer. There is a timeline and the timeline, they’re already starting and so we’re hoping that everything will go as scheduled.”

The kink is that the works might go past the tenth September celebrations but come Independence Day, according to the Mayor, Belizeans should be partying on two improved downtown streets – with attractive sidewalks.
