BAHA charges man found with imported vegetables

Story PictureA Ladyville man, who pleaded guilty last week to uncustomed goods comprising tomatoes and sweet peppers, faced additional charges today in Magistrates’ Court, this time from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority. On July twenty-second Jose Quintero was fined thirty-five thousand dollars after he pleaded guilty for the possession of over eleven thousand dollars worth of tomatoes and sweet peppers. And today BAHA charged Quintero for importing the vegetables from Mexico without a valid permit. Interestingly, while Quintero pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of uncustomed goods, he pleaded not guilty to the latest charge of importing the vegetables without a valid permit. He was nabbed by customs officials on July twenty-first at a Ladyville checkpoint while he was driving a blue Dodge Ram van containing ninety-four cases of vegetables. Quintero was offered bail of two thousand dollars and his case was adjourned until September sixteenth.
