B.N.E. tanker runs off the road; minor spillage

Late this afternoon Belize Natural Energy issued a release which clarifies an earlier statement made by the oil company. According to B.N.E., one of its tankers ran off the road near Mile sixteen on the Hummingbird Highway, and turned on its side. Original reports indicated that there was no oil in the tanker, but this afternoon it was confirmed that a quantity of oil was transferred to another tanker. Officials from the Department of Environment confirmed to News Five that the tanker was loaded with nine thousand two hundred gallons of crude oil and was heading to Big Creek when it ran off the road near the Alta Vista Citrus products factory. D.O.E. officials were at the site this afternoon assessing any potential damage to the environment. It is reported that there was a minimal spillage of oil due to a small crack in the tanker.
