Gentle Touch eliminates Sugar City from championship round

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and we’re certainly happy to present this Tuesday version of Sports Monday. We were in Free Port Bahamas over the weekend for a family reunion. Check this blast out guys, my brother is wealthy, my sister has a palatial residence and my niece owns one of the finest homes on the island. But enough about us.

So we quickly take you inside the RF&G Football Tournament currently in session inside this beautiful jewel of ours. So north we go to the Ricalde Stadium where new comer Nizhee Corozal looked to make it two wins in a row at the expense of Suga Boys Juventus who come in desperate not to go zero and two this early in the season. Folks, we’re late in the first half in a 1-1 ballgame when Christopher Hendricks fires this rise as he tries to push O.W. to the lead. At the other end, National Team player, Victor Morales, struts his world class stuff when he dials this long distance that is rejected only by the far upright. Julio Valle then beats his man and uncharacteristically misses from point blank range in a bid to grab the game winner for Corozal. At the half, nevertheless, it’s still a 1-1 ballgame. In second half action Nizhee Corozal emerges as the true protagonist in this ballgame. Victor Morales finds Clifton West whose header finds neither the back of the goal nor his teammate, Antonio Castillo. So Corozal tries again and Derys Benavides simply mis-times his jump on this attempted header, squandering a golden opportunity. Benavides tries to make amends with this right foot punch that ricochets off the defence only to bounce off the near upright. For the Suga Boys things go even more sour when striker Deon Flowers earns his second yellow card of the match on this obvious foul and Juventus is automatically reduced to ten men on the field. At the seventy-fifth minute, the numerical advantage comes in to play when Derys Benavides finds himself unattended and freezes the goal keeper to give Nizhee Corozal the 2-1 big W and its second win in two tries in the RF&G Tournament.

In other action around the league, the shootout west between Benque Viejo D.C. United and defending champ Hankook Verdes rallied to a 1-1 stalemate. F.C. Belize continued on its winning ways, bombing the San Pedro Dolphins 3-1. The Belize Defence Force rebounded with a 1-zip win over Georgetown Ibayani while in the battle of Dangriga, we call it the Dangriga Derby Llagulei burned Wagiya 3-2. Looking at the schedule for week three, it’s all Sunday matches this weekend. San Pedro Dolphins will host Nizhee Corozal pit at the island and that promises to be a good one. Suga Boys Juventus will be at home against Georgetown Ibayani and hopefully the home cooking will change things for them. F.C. Belize travels to Hankook Verdes, Llagulei will get a visit from Benque D.C. while the B.D.F. plays host to Wagiya at the M.C.C. grounds.

Turning to the Belize Female Football League playoffs, we take you to Trial Farm O.W. where the Sugar City Girls get a visit from the defending champion Gentle Touch on Saturday. And when Cynthia Salazar comes up with this defensive gift in the opening minutes she should have opened the scoreboard and given O.W. the early lead. A few minutes later, the Esperanza team gets its turn at goal. Kimberly Peres beats the defence and then slices the ball past the keeper to give Gentle touch the 1-zip lead. Cindy Fuentes then gets her shot to double the Esperanza lead but fails to beat the keeper. Vanessa Mai could tie the ballgame for O.W. with this punch but it’s directly at Eden Gentle, the goal keeper and at the half it’s a 1-nil ballgame. In the second half O.W. gets an early opportunity to tie the ballgame but they don’t seize the opportunity with both hands or not even with both feet. However, at the sixth minute in the half, Samantha Carlos hooks up with this center and smacks it home to tie the ballgame at one apiece. We’ve got a monster show going on when Esperanza mounts this press the O.W. keeper comes up with the initial stop. There’s a scramble in front of the goal, make that a mad scramble. Indira Spain, fresh off the bench, comes up with possession. Gentle Touch eliminates Sugar City Girls 2-1 and make it to the championship round. We certainly send our congratulations.

In the other match, Delille Pumas of Dangriga shocked Millennium Girls of Belize City 1-zip on a goal by Nataki Alvarez and the Griga team is into the three game championship series while the Millennium Girls, they go to play golf right about now. Game one of this big time series comes up Saturday at Cayo as Gentle Touch plays host to Delille Pumas. It’s gonna be quite a monster.

Turning to the cycling scene, the first junior cycling tour comes up from the twenty-first of August to the twenty-fourth and it’s being presented by the Belize Cycling Association. It will feature riders from Mexico, Guatemala, and Canada. So the home boys will be severely tested. It’s a four stage race. It travels on the initial day from Orange Walk to Belize. Then there’s the time trial even in stage two. Stage three finds the ride from Belmopan to Middlesex and back to the finish at Belmopan and the final stage, which is the fourth stage, travels to Belize City from Cayo. Jerome Williams is the contact man. Don’t miss it young guys, this is your opportunity to shine.

In closing folks, we say nuff love to Ruby, Edgar, Elvira, James, Peggy, Denika and even you Short Bwai for making my stay a most memorable one. In the meantime fans, we return to our usual Monday slot next week. We invite you to join us at that time. That’s it. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
