D.P.P. wants more evidence on the fatal shooting by police

Story PictureIn an update to the fatal shooting of forty-nine year old Alexander Herrera on Sunday afternoon, today News Five learnt that the Director of Public Prosecutions, Sheryl-Lynn Branker-Tait, has requested that police conduct further interviews with civilians who witnessed the incident around noon that day. Police submitted a file to the D.P.P’s office that contained statements only from police officers who were at the scene. Branker-Tait says she will make a decision on whether charges will be filed against any officer once the file is complete. The Ladyville man was shot in the back as he swam to his boat docked near the Swing Bridge and the fatal shot is said to have been fired by Patrol officer, Dixon Polonio. Herrera’s family has contradicted a report made by the police alleging that Herrera had threatened them with a small black handgun.

Meanwhile, Belize City police are still looking for two suspects in connection with Wednesday afternoon’s brazen attack on Doony’s Store on Albert Street. While police say they know who committed the crime, locating them has been a challenge. Doony’s Store was robbed shortly after one on Wednesday afternoon by one of two youths who rode up to the store and held security guard, Elton Jex at gunpoint. The gunman escorted Jex toward the store’s proprietor, Manisha Sadarangani, and demanded all the available cash, which was handed over to him. On the way out he also took a cellular phone from a customer.
