Charges withdrawn against 4 cops who were charged with wounding

In the courts, four of six police officers who were arraigned in May for wounding Elvin Torres we relieved of the charges today. The Department of Public Prosecutions directed the court to withdraw the charges against the four but didn’t give any reasons why.

It all relates to an incident on May ninth when the police check point at mile four on the Western Highway was showered with bullets. Shortly after, thirty-six year old Elvin Torres and twenty year old Reginald Young drove by in a pickup truck.

They were pursued and caught near the Hattieville Roundabout, where Torres says he was badly beaten by the police officers. PCs Kareem Fuller, Tyrone Baizer, Glenwayne Grant and Mark Martinez of Belize City along with Fernando Franzua of Hattieville and Henry Nunez from San Ignacio Town were all charged days later. But a memorandum from the DPP states that only Franzua and Nunez are to re-appear in court on November fifth.

While there is no official explanation for the withdrawal, the victim pointed out to our court reporter after the first arraignment that the officers were charged without an identification parade being conducted. He predicted then that the case would fall apart. One of the accused cops told our court reporter today that the ID parade was held three months after they were charged.

How can the DPP office withdraw charges with no explanation? R u serious? I thought I had heard it all when it comes to our court systems. We need to change up all the people who r currently employed there. That is y people have no respect for police, because a lot of them continuously get away with everything, so the good pay for the bad. And no wonder witness’s r hard to find, the cases always fall apart. The Guy knew this would happen, he said the case would fall apart, now he’s just another victim who’s received no justice.

this is no surprise to us belizeans since rogue cops always get away with what they do, but one thing i always keep in mind is that every dog has his day, so they might laugh thier @$$es away but thier day will come when someone somewhere is gonna do the payback in full. DPP is a joke to criminals i wonder if they have any pride in thier work they do, or it’s only the paycheck that keep them there which is really pathetic.

It is in the law that the DPP does not have to give any explanation for his/her decision. I am just adding that although the police officers was charged for their wrong doings a BDF soldier was involve and was not charge. Every time police officers are crucified and victimized for only allegations and no one ever speak about the other departments and the Belize Defense Force.

Oh john public, I never knew that, thanks for the info. You’re right I just remembered a bdf was involved too. That ish stinks!
