Baby Faith lives, esophagus constructive surgery successful

faith ortiz

We’ve reported on the touching story of a baby born with a birth defect in early August. The infant did not have an esophagus, which meant she could not consume any food and had to be fed through a tube.  It was a trying time for the mother, a teary eyed Dina Ortiz. But with a stroke of good luck, the International Hospital for Children, Friends of Pediatrics, as well as donors from Canada stepped in to help.  On August sixteenth, Ortiz and her newborn who she named Faith, were flown to Richmond Virginia, where the infant underwent constructive surgery. They were not due to return for another couple months, but the surgery and recovery were so successful, that both mother and newborn are now back at home. News Five caught up with Ortiz, whose tears have been replaced with joy.

“After surgery, we waited one week and on the Tuesday they took her down to do an x-ray and they gave her some contrast to drink and they saw that she had no leaking of the surgery sign. So the doctor decided to remove her chest tube and to have her drink as she can and from there she did very well. We stayed another week for her to get more weight so that she can be discharged. A week after she was discharged and then we continued follow up and her last weight last week Wednesday was eleven pound and ten ounces and they were happy about it and they agreed that she could now be sent back home.”

“As you’re aware after our first story, some doctors in Canada decided that they would like to help with the tickets—I believe they were the Hohls. And they have contacted me and said that when Faith is ready to attend school, they would like to assist somehow in assisting with her education. What do you think about that?”

Dina Ortiz

“That is wonderful to hear. That would be very nice. I’ve also sent email to the person who helped us and I’ve sent pictures of her surgery and telling of her recovery. And everyone is amazed because they didn’t expect her to do well. And the doctor tell me when I come home I still feed ahn little bit ‘fraid because she still have like a barking cough like that of a seal, but the doctor say that that will go away until she is about four five years of age. But right now, I can treat her like a normal baby, I don’t have to worry about anything.”
