Belize American women return with gifts

Belizean Americans often return to the Jewel during the celebration month of September. But three Belizeans from Los Angeles, California decided on a post Independence Day visit to give back to children, schools and the indigent. According to Glenda Flowers, what started as a U.S. based pageant to maintain Belizean heritage four years ago, has transformed into a social outreach in which pageant winners return to the Jewel to give to the country that is still their home.

“Miss America Belize started when my daughter, Isabel, went up for queen and won. She had a good, good. She was very happy when she won. Her self-esteem rise up to the top. She is also a singer and right now she is an artist. So she decided, mommy you like to give away stuff so let’s have a queen program and when the queen wins take them back to Belize where I’m from and that’s what we’re doing now.”

“My name is Divah Denise Williams and I am the new queen of the golden years for the Miss America Belize pageant. And the Miss America Belize Pageant means a lot to me especially having this title. It’s for more mature women to uplift us and give us a good feeling of self worth.”

“For me it’s like to set a positive role model for the young teens out there—the young ladies that you can be beautiful on the inside and outside. It’s just a wonderful thing to like explore the world, do things you know anything your dreams can come through. So it’s a wonderful experience. We plan on giving like medical supplies, school supplies for the students and children. We’re also visiting my school that I went to St. Luke’s Methodist School where we are having a huge program tomorrow. On the news all you hear about is like the gangs and stuff and to like bring back enlightment you know, we come and bring back clothes and stuff for the kids to make them happy.  So I believe that’s a wonderful thing that we are doing.”

“For myself, it is an honor first of all, truly an honor because there’s not a lot of program around that you can see where they are giving back. And for me to be a home grown Belizean gial first of all, it’s truly an honor. And the link to stay with my culture—and culture is very important—values that was taught to us growing up and it’s important to always look back where you come from and we can pass on something to the youths.”

In addition to visiting sick persons, they gave makeovers earlier today on Oleander Street in the St. Martin Deporres Area in Belize City. The queens also have an automated wheelchair that they would like to donate to a needy person.

Very nice. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I can’t recall ever hearing Ms Belize or the queen of the bay doing anything like this. This should b one of the things these young ladies r required to do. Uplift their community n country, try to give back, solicit donations n give to those in need. if they do already, my apologies. Again, good job young ladies!

Glenda and all your Divas, I just want to commend you and your family of all your good works you are doing for our country, if more of our people would do this it would be so good, before you all judge her for what she is doing, why don’t you all do something for your Belizeans also. Many of our Belizeans are here bragging of what they are making and what they have and don’t share of give theirs tithes to The Church. HELP YOUR BELIZEAN PEOPLE by giving up something I have done that, remember where your from, GLENDA HAVEN”TFORGOTTEN WHERE WERE FROM.
