2010 September Celebrations Commenced on St. George’s Caye

September is less than two days away and to kick off the month long festivities a delegation of government officials and other invited guests including Governor General Sir Colville Young converged on St. George’s Caye on Sunday to officially commence the 2010 celebrations.  St George’s Caye is revered as the tiny island where the famous battle between the Spaniards and the Baymen was fought.  Among the guest speakers on hand for the ceremony was Dr. Jaime Awe, Director of the Institute of Archaeology.

“We at the National Institute of Culture and History decided to begin a collaborative research project with my colleagues Dr. Jim Garber and Dr. Lawrence Sullivan from the University of Texas-San Marcos and the University of Massachusetts respectively. The purpose of our project was to try to better understand who the people were that lived on this small island from the late seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries. How was life for them on this small island? And what kind of challenges were they forced to face in what was then one of the most remote corners of the Caribbean world? Excavations that we carried out during the last two summers—in fact we just finished the excavations of this year about two weeks ago.”

This is very exciting! I am looking forward to their findings. Hopefully we can uncover some truths behind the legend of the Battle of St. George’s Caye Day and put the various theories to test!

Also, I am so glad to see Dr. Awe expanding outside Mayan Archeology.
