Operation Jaguar still restoring Belize

doug singh

On Wednesday night we reported extensively on the state of affairs in the police department. And just in case you were wondering what’s up with Operation Jaguar, we can tell you that police claim it is still in effect..  The operation got off to a grand start and appeared to be holding down crime, at least in the first month.  But violence flared up again and the initiative clearly lost steam. These days there is a reduction of foot patrols on the streets, primarily in the numbers of BDF soldiers.  But Minister Doug Singh says Jaguar is very much alive, though it may no longer be as ferocious as its name implies.

Doug Singh, Minister of Police

“The commitment is to continue to have Jaguar Operation go all the way through to September at this point in time. So there is no discontinuation of the operation.  There are probably slight fluctuations in the manpower of the operation, but it is not a pattern or it is not necessarily consistent.  We try to keep it up at a level where we can.  We are seeing reduced positive returns.  The marginal returns are being reduced over time and we are evaluating that situation to see what we can do differently to sustain the programme and get some better positive results.”
